Despite being the highest paid actor on TV at the time and the fact that the show brought fading matinee star Hudson renewed attention, Hudson initially resented being on a TV show. He felt that it was a marked step down from his former stardom as well the scripts being of mediocre quality in relations to movie scripts. It wasn't until years later that he changed his tune when he realized how many people fondly remembered the show and could recite favorite episode storylines to him. He quipped to co-star Susan St James a year before his passing "why didn't he try harder?" In response to his reassessment.
