Not only were longtime costars Jerry Orbach and Jesse L. Martin both Broadway musical stars before being regulars on Law & Order, but both men were also once in Broadway shows that, famously, had their creators die on opening night: Gower Champion, the director/choreographer of 42nd Street (starring Orbach), and Jonathan Larson, the composer/lyricist of Rent (starring Martin).
