When this film had been released, slashers had mostly gone out of style and were considered a dead sub-genre of horror at the time. This film's success is credited for revitalizing interest in slashers, and is why I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) was even greenlit, as it was initially a script that Kevin Williamson had trouble selling before his newfound fame. The film infamously spawned several imitators including Disturbing Behavior (1998), Urban Legend (1998) (which itself faced harsh criticism that it was a blatant rip-off of this film), Cherry Falls (2000), and numerous others.
