In the actual event, the nearest landfalls from the point of the sinking were the Marquesas Islands and the Society Islands, both of them unfamiliar to the officers. Little was known of their precise positions or the disposition of the natives. There was reason to fear cannibals, cruelly ironic in light of the ultimate outcome. There were in fact Western missions in the Society Islands at the time. In Nickerson's memoirs he asserts that the entire crew might have made it there safely in only a few weeks. Melville comes to the same conclusion in his notes on Chase's narrative.
