Chester W. Nimitz skipped two ranks before assuming command of the Pacific fleet, going from Captain to Rear Admiral (now known as Rear Admiral Upper Half - two stars) in 1938 and from there to Admiral (four stars) in December, 1941. This was ten days after the Pearl Harbor attack and simultaneous with his appointment as CINCPACFLT. The ranks he skipped was Commodore (now known as Rear Admiral Lower Half - one star) and Vice Admiral (three stars).
