Paul Thomas Anderson and long-time collaborator Robert Elswit had a falling out over the cinematography of this film. Elswit was upset over Anderson's experimental filmmaking process, and the two would often argue over the look of the film. Elswit would also later criticize the cinematography of Anderson's next film Il filo nascosto (2017) (which was shot by Anderson himself along with Michael Bauman) and expressed particular annoyance over the fact that Phantom Thread featured extensive use of smoke, something that Anderson had forbidden Elswit to use during their almost 20-year-long working relationship.
