David Scarboro, who originally played Mark Fowler, struggled to cope with the press attention around the show, meaning the character had to be quickly written out. The character of Simon 'Wicksy' Wicks, who was planned as a long-term introduction, was brought into the show much earlier than planned to fill the gap.
