In the comics, Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man, first appeared in Moon Knight #3 in January 1981. He was a skilled martial artist and master thief, stealing priceless works of art, jewels, and artifacts from all around the world. He became known as the Midnight Man because his thefts would take place exactly at midnight. He also stole for the simple pleasure of the act and not for financial gain. He became one of Moon Knight's adversaries after Moon Knight prevented him from stealing a rare Monet oil painting and threw him into the river. Mogart was presumed drowned, but he was actually carried by the current to New York and the mouth of a drainage viaduct. The wastes in the sewer melted his face, leaving him deformed. Hiding in the sewers for three days, he returned to his home to find the police had taken all his stolen goods. Blaming Moon Knight for this and his deformity, he vowed vengeance. In the comics, Midnight Man wears a caped dark blue costume that resembles Moon Knight's white costume.
