During the early days of season 1 pre-production, Roger C. Carmel was contacted to see if he would play the character of Harry Mudd again (a role that he had played in two famous episodes of the original 1960s series). This was to have been in one of the earlier episodes in the first season of ST:TNG to further establish the connection between both shows. Unfortunately, Carmel died before the filming of the pilot had even begun, so the idea had to be abandoned.
