To correct his pectus excavatum condition, Kinnaman's chest had two metal bars inserted through his ribs and into his chest. The bars were then shaped and expanded in such a way that they pushed his chest out, and then were affixed to his ribs to keep them in place. Joel was still fitted with these metal braces while filming this series.
