This sequel to 'Top Gun' (1986) arrives after an interval of about 36 years. 'Top Gun' (1986) was a big enough movie to have its own parody picture, 'Hot Shots' (1991), made by another studio, and it debuted about just five years after the subject of its spoof. What is interesting in this universe is that the parody was so successful in itself, that it produced a sequel, 'Hot Shots: Part Deux' (1993), and this came out within only about a couple of years. This follow-up to the spoof launched about seven years after 'Top Gun' (1986), so by the mid-1990s, there were two spoofs of 'Top Gun' (1986) and yet just one 'Top Gun' movie, the parodies outnumbering the number of originals 2 to 1. 'Top Gun: Maverick' (2022) was filmed in 2018. Even if the film had debuted in 2019, it has still taken a considerably longer time, more than 30 years, for its sequel to surface, yet its parody's sequel got made and released within only a couple of years.
