Spider-Man makes his first MCU appearance in this film, opposite Captain America. Both characters have many similarities to rival DC's flagship hero, Superman. Captain America and Superman both first appeared in the 1930s, as one of their respective publisher's signature heroes, and both battled the Third Reich in their respective titles. Captain America was actually the only character still in used in the 1960s, when Stan Lee created most of Marvel's other popular characters. Peter Parker quickly became a fan favorite, just as Superman had been. Both characters wear glasses and work at a major metropolitan newspaper, though Parker works as a photographer, more like Jimmy Olsen. All three characters have a red-and-blue color scheme to their costumes, resembling the American flag.
