Drew Goddard and Matt Reeves knew they had to drive the group underground somehow. Reeves then saw a clip online of troops in Iraq who were going through a night battle. The drama and intensity mixed with confusion that Reeves saw in this clip is what led to the idea of the street battle between soldiers and the monster that ultimately drives the group to go down to the subway tunnels. None of the street battle scene was shot in New York. All of it was filmed at four different sound stages and sets built in L.A.
