The main influences on this film were American Graffiti (1973) and Fuori di testa (1982). Fast Times was also set in the San Fernando Valley, and features a scene set in an actual Licorice Pizza record store. In the opening of the movie, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus) can be seen walking past the store front of Licorice Pizza at the then Sherman Oaks Galleria in the 1980s.
