Sayaka's witch form is knight-mermaid, which may be an allusion to the Hans Christian Andersen story of the "The Little Mermaid." In the original story (not seen in the 1989 Disney adaptation), a young girl trades her body for the guy she loves only to lose him to someone else, similar to Sayaka's plot line after she makes her contract with Kyubey.
