In Matrix (1999), when Morpheus tells Neo the story about The One, he states that The Oracle prophesied The One's return and his hailing would bring about the destruction of The Matrix, and end the war between man and machine. At the end of the movie, the war is indeed ended, but The Matrix is not destroyed when an assimilated Neo destroys Agent Smith once and for all; the Matrix is reset and the truth about it revealed to the human population, who are given a chance to be freed. In Matrix (1999), Morpheus already mentioned that the Oracle tells you "exactly what you need[ed] to hear", and that "there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path". In an earlier scene, he explained that "most of these people [inside the Matrix] are not ready to be unplugged". Morpheus' statements in the first film thus foreshadowed the ending of The Matrix Revolutions.
