In the scene where Hilly drives to Skeeter/Eugenia's house, Hilly is drinking a beer while driving. As bad as that was, Hilly might not have been breaking the law. Mississippi is the only state where it is perfectly legal for adults 21 and over to drink and drive as long as their BAC does not exceed .08%. Assuming Holly's BAC was under the legal limit, she was not doing anything illegal.
