Leiji Matsumoto had thought of the concept of "wave-motion" since he was a sixth-grader; it made its first appearance in Matsumoto's early work "Dafuin" (1969), a manga comic (then it was mentioned as the "Space Wave-Motion Theory"). Matsumoto later considered whether this concept could apply to the series, so he asked his brother (who was then a student engineer at Kyushu University) to investigate and possibly validate it on a computer. The answer he got was: "It is not necessarily false." Whether or not it could really be done, the theory held up and the term was used.
