Each of the three live-action Star Trek series after Star Trek (1966), which are set in the twenty-fourth century, had a cameo appearance by a character from its predecessor series in its premiere episode. In this one, "Emissary" has a cameo by Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)'s Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Sir Patrick Stewart.
