Tilda Swinton was originally offered the role of Professor Trelawney, but declined. She later stated in an interview that she passed on the opportunity due to negative personal experiences from attending a London boarding school, and that she dislikes movies that romanticize such "lonely and isolating" places. Dame Emma Thompson was later offered the part, and accepted to impress her four-year-old daughter, Gaia Wise.
