John Mahoney was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer. Mahoney's character Martin turned 65 in Season 5. Thus Martin would be 60 to 61 in Season 1 when Frasier turned 41, meaning Martin would have been only 19 or 20 years old when Frasier was born. So the age difference between the two actors is roughly that of the characters.
