Dame Angela Lansbury, who was a possible candidate for the title role of the first movie, previously starred in Pomi d'ottone e manici di scopa (1971) (adapted from the popular children's book by Mary Norton), which was an earlier attempt by Disney to replicate the successful formula of Mary Poppins (1964). David Tomlinson appeared in both movies; in Mary Poppins (1964), he played George Banks, the father of Michael and Jane and voiced Mr. Binnacle and the parrot handle on Mary Poppins' umbrella.
