Whilst cooperation between ITV and the BBC is rare, in 1996, two main cast members of Coronation Street were given time off the show in order to film BBC sitcoms. Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) was granted leave to appear in The Legacy of Reginald Perrin (1996), reprising her role of Joan Greengross from The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976), while Sherrie Hewson (Maureen Holdsworth) took time out to film the pilot for Oh, Doctor Beeching! (1976). Ultimately, the former show was not recommissioned, while Hewson chose to stay in Coronation Street, with Julia Deakin replacing her in Oh, Doctor Beeching! However, Hewson was axed from Coronation Street by new producer Brian Park soon after Oh, Doctor Beeching! aired its first series.
