In 1983, DC Comics purchased the rights to several characters from Charlton Comics, including Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, and the Question, among others. At the same time, Alan Moore began developing Watchmen, and he wanted the story to feature Charlton's characters. Peacemaker was to be the one murdered at the beginning, and the story was titled "Who Killed the Peacemaker". However, DC wanted Moore to create his own characters instead, and thus Peacemaker was replaced with the Comedian. In this film, when Peacemaker kills Rick Flag, Flag says "Peacemaker... what a joke" before dying, a possible nod to the Comedian.
