Sought he was very unhappy with his role, not because of the feud with Jane Wyman, Robert Foxworth left the show at the end of the sixth season. He had wanted to come back from a year's sabbatical, but the producers could not work out a deal and Foxworth never returned as earlier planned, so the character of Chase Gioberti would remain dead.
