Despite being known in the US as the creator of the iconic American kids series 'Sesame Street', Jim Henson had tried in vain to sell the concept of this new show to several US television networks but none of them showed any interest in pursuing the idea. Out of desperation Henson approached UK television and film mogul, Sir Lew Grade. Grade liked the idea and agreed to finance a series provided Henson agreed to make the shows in Britain. The series became an instant hit in the UK and was sold to other countries where it also caught on. Ironically many American viewers were surprised to find out that despite appearances, this was not a US produced show.
