When they first show the Alexis character she was not even cast yet; an extra was playing the part. The reason she's wearing a huge brim hat, a veil and sunglasses is because Spelling doesn't want you to see the extra's face too clearly. They were hoping to ensnare Sophia Loren for this role. When she said no they went after Jessica Walter; who also didn't work out. Finally they settled on Joan Collins. (She wasn't going to be British originally either; that change came with the casting of Collins). For the Collins' first day of shooting they gave her the exact same dress, hat, and sunglasses that the extra was wearing on the cliffhanger episode at the end of the last season.
