The alternate universe where Peter B. and MJ are divorced is a satirical depiction of the scrapped plan for a potential fourth film for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man film series. The initial draft for the fourth film reveals that Peter and MJ would have been married but end up divorced because he cheated on her with Felicia Hardy. Raimi thought that Peter was too much of a jerk and wanted more time than Sony would give him to rewrite the script to make the character more likable. Hence, due to this issue as well as other issues such as Sony's changing priorities of the direction of the Spider-Man franchise, the script was ultimately scrapped. In this film, the reason why Peter B. and MJ divorced is because he initially didn't want children.
