The Extended Edition (not the theatrical cut) of this film is the first Middle-earth movie in the franchise to receive an R rating by the MPAA. It is also the first Extended Edition with the second least amount of new footage (twenty minutes). The movie with the least amount of new footage is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) (thirteen minutes).
