The inception of this animated Superman cartoon came as a surprise to the Batman (1992) creative team who were actually working on Freakazoid! (1995) at the time which was part of the Steven Spielberg Warner Brothers cartoons produced by Tom Ruegger. Bruce Timm had become disenchanted with "Freakazoid!" since he considered the show to be more action heavy with a comedy flavor, but the show had become more of a comedy variety show with occasional action adventure. After Timm pulled out of "Freakazoid!" and just started sitting around his office, President of Warner Bros Animation Jean MacCurdy casually asked Timm if he wanted to work on a Superman cartoon since there was already interest from WB in doing a live-action Superman movie. Timm said yes and not long after production on the series went in place.
