The movements of the black goo consumed by the Engineer were based on the movements of starlings. To find a method of depicting the Engineer's DNA destruction, the visual effects experts carved vein-like structures from silicone and pumped black ink and oils into them, and then filmed the changes occurring over an extended period of time.
