As late as the year 2000, New York Times film critic A. O. Scott in reviewing director Nicolas Hytner's "Center Stage" claimed that after 20 years, a new generation certainly deserved a brand-new "Fame" of their own, but that Hytner's film was barely comparable to Alan Parker's 1980 original.
