The fictional H.M.S. Ranger nuclear submarine is based on the real-life Resolution class, where four were constructed as part of the Polaris program. The Royal Navy decommissioned the Resolution class in 1996, with the Vanguard class as its replacement, carrying Trident II missiles. The Soviet submarine is a Delta class, which was replaced in the early 1980s by the Typhoon class (subject of Caccia a Ottobre Rosso (1990) with ex-Bond Sir Sean Connery).
