In early drafts of the script, Dr. Christmas Jones was French Polynesian and was named after the island she was from: Christmas Island. The history of nuclear testing in that area was also meant to explain her focus on nuclear clean-up and working for the International Decommissioning Agency. However, the decision was made to turn the character American and this backstory was dropped from later drafts.
