In 1961, Desilu Productions faced the abrupt cancellation of four of their sitcoms ("Angel", "The Ann Sothern Show", "Guestward, Ho!", and "Harrigan and Son"). A fifth sitcom was canceled in early 1962, "Pete and Gladys". Desilu needed to quickly come up with a replacement show, and hopefully a hit that would convince CBS to invest in more productions by Desilu. The result was "The Lucy Show", promoted as the television comeback of Lucille Ball.
