Rey's parents hide her from her grand-father the former Emperor Darth Sidious when she is a child to protect her. This mirrors the opening of Rogue One where Jyn Erso's parents try to hide Jyn. However unlike the well received Rogue One, the change in Rey's parents from what The Last Jedi stated was negatively received by critics and fans alike. Who agreed the story of Rey being the daughter on unimportant persons who was sold by her parents was better. Finding the Rise of Skywalker retconned story as something else that had been made before in better films like Rogue One.
