In Scream 4 (2011), the killers were doing a "remake/reboot" of the Stab franchise, whereas in this film, the killers are doing a "re-quel" due to their dissatisfaction with Stab 8. As explained in the film, a re-quel combines elements of a sequel to and a reboot of a franchise: while still connected to the originals and in the same cinematic universe, it goes into another direction; often by ignoring or downright retconning previous installments, or by not continuing storylines from the previous sequels but from older ones, even bringing back original actors to reprise their iconic roles.
