John Garfield and Luther Adler appeared together in this film, and both were part of the Group Theatre of the 1930s, of which Adler was a founding member. Adler, who was never athletic-looking, was cast as the violinist turned boxer Joe Bonaparte in Clifford Odets' Golden Boy, a part Garfield was born to play. Garfield left Broadway and became a major film star, something Adler would never attain. This film reunited them.
