Although the main character in the movie is driven by sexual impulses, Adrian Tofei didn't want to make that obvious in any way, preferring them to be childlike, unaware of their own desires. He believes that when the villain is the lead in a movie, they can't be an absolute villain, because watching the movie would be unbearable in the absence of anything to empathize with.
