Sonic using rings as portals to go to different areas has been a mechanic since the very first game, where Warp Rings would take Sonic to the Special Stages. When activating the portals, the iconic "Ring Loss" sound plays, and when entering/exiting them, the even-more-iconic "Ring Pickup" sound is heard.
