According to Peyton Reed, Scott shrinking into the Microverse to save Cassie is inspired by sci-fi writer Richard Matheson's stories "Little Girl Lost" (from Ai confini della realtà (1959)) and Radiazioni BX: distruzione uomo (1957), and the inter-dimensional travel films 2001: Odissea nello spazio (1968) and The Black Hole - Il buco nero (1979).
