Paimter and designer on documentaries for NASA ,Douglas collaborated on the film 'To the Moon and Beyond' which was seen at The Worlds Fair in 1964. When he heard about the film 2001 a Space Odyssey he contacted Stanley Kubrick and asked to work on it. To direct his first film Silent Running he learnt about everything as he went along, The droids were named Huey Dewey and Louie after Donald Ducks nephews.
