The character Dr. Richter was rather obviously inspired by Back to the Future's Dr. Emmett Brown ("Doc"): similar hairstyle and age, the same anxious, overly theatrical demeanor and utter fascination with modern technology unbeknownst to him (such as the cellphone he marvels at).
