Made its network television debut on CBS as opposed to ABC which initially broadcast the first four Star Trek films. CBS had bought the rights as part of a package of Paramount films released in 1989. Paramount Pictures and CBS are currently sister companies, with the latter's production arm, CBS Television Studios, now owning the core rights to the "Star Trek" franchise, but Paramount Studios retains home video rights to all productions in the franchise as well as the rights to make feature films in the franchise.
