Author Emma Donoghue stated she was inspired by the real life case of Natascha Kampusch and Wolfgang Priklopil, not the Ariel Castro case. Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus weren't able to escape from Castro until 2013, and the book was published in 2010.
