One of only two plots that Agatha Christie derived from a real-life event. The other was Assassinio allo specchio (1980), inspired by actress Gene Tierney, who gave birth to a brain-damaged child after contracting rubella from a contagious fan who broke quarantine to see the star make a personal appearance. As is the case in the Christie adaptation, the fan rushed up to the pregnant Tierney to kiss her in gratitude. The baby was ultimately born developmentally disabled and had to be institutionalized.
