The failed assassination attempt on Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Nedeljko Cabrinovic, a co-conspirator of Gavrilo Princip who threw a bomb at the archduke's car, is a true historical event. The bomb bounced off the car and didn't harm Ferdinand nor his wife, but severely wounded the occupants in the car behind them. Hours after this failed attempt, the couple insisted on visiting the wounded in the hospital. A different route for the motorcade was planned out to avoid the city center, but due to miscommunication about this altered route, Ferdinand's car took a turn into the wrong street. Princip was actually at a café contemplating a new assassination attempt along Ferdinand's original return route when Ferdinand's car unexpectedly drove by, and stopped close to where Princip was standing; he didn't hesitate and shot Ferdinand, along with his wife.
