Berg attends a synagogue before his meeting with Heisenberg. The prayer that is being sung during the service is the Kol Nidrei, which means that Berg is not just attending an ordinary daily or weekly worship service but is, in fact, at the service for the start of Yom Kippur, arguably the holiest observance on the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur is the time when observant Jewish people fast and atone for their past year's sins.
