Toei, who produce the source footage for Power Rangers, nearly made a live action Moon Knight TV series in the late 1970s. Bearing the Marvel license which they used to make Spider-Man, Toei had another two years left on their contract and Moon Knight made it to at least the production art stage. Undoubtedly considered due to its similarities to the iconic tokusatsu hero Moonlight Mask, Toei passed on making the series but a manga adaptation was made by Gosaku Ota for the magazine Televi-Kun from August 1979 to July 1980. Known for its superhero comics (typically from Toei) for small children, the Televi-Kun series saw Moon Knight as a teenage ninja named Shingo Touma who battled his clan's nemesis the Black Wolf Clan. A character bearing a slight resemblance to Toei's Moon Knight design (primarily his red saber) emerged in Kamen Rider Black and Kamen Rider Black RX called Shadow Moon. In the American adaptation of the latter series in Masked Rider, the character was named Robo Rider.
