Having Tilda Swinton play the part of The Ancient One in Doctor Strange was a creative decision because Marvel wanted more women in the movie, for taking "ancient one" more as a title instead a personal name. The role of Wong was already written for the film and given to an Asian actor than would go on within the franchise, while The Ancient One was supposed to die. They gave the role to Swinton to 1. add more women in the film and 2. to have a known actress take on the part.
